Special equipment: open top and flat rack

When cargo exceeds the limits of a standard container, open top or flat rack equipment is required. We start from the dimensions and weight, then confirm the container type, availability and handling conditions.

Over-height, over-width, over-length — cargo other forwarders turn down, we work out how to move.

What we verify first

  • Actual length, width, height and unit weight, and whether the cargo can be broken down.
  • Loading and discharge conditions at both ends: lifting equipment, road height and width limits.
  • Equipment availability — special equipment is tight and must be confirmed early.
  • Lashing and dunnage plan, and the securing charges that follow from it.

Where shipments usually go wrong

  • Dimensions declared inaccurately, so the cargo cannot be discharged without re-stuffing.
  • Road height and width limits at either end overlooked.
  • Equipment confirmed too late to make the intended sailing.
FAQ

Special Equipment · common questions

QAt what size does cargo need special equipment?

When dimensions or weight exceed the internal dimensions and payload of a standard container, open top or flat rack equipment comes into play. Send us the length, width, height and unit weight and we will recommend a container type.

QCan you guarantee equipment availability?

No. Special equipment is tight, so we check availability with the carrier and the depot first, then tell you whether it is feasible.

QWho does the lashing?

Normally a specialist securing contractor at the load port, with the cost shown separately. The method follows the cargo characteristics and the carrier's requirements.
